Pinnawala

Established by the SL Wildlife Conservation Department in 1975, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for endangered Asian wild elephants of Sri Lanka. It is reached via the A1 Kandy Colombo highway by taking a turnoff at around the 82 km mark at Kegalle, where the road leads directly to the orphanage.  Currently there are about 90 elephants living here, the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. Each animal has to be fed on average 75 kilos of fodder per day. You can also chose to visit the nearby Millennium Foundation which also takes care of tame elephants and you can feed and bathe elephants and go for a bareback ride.
